GS Archive - Bang Barstal

Finished
Thanks goes out to Ryan Armand, creator behind the most excellent Minus for the link love last week. And also some big thumbs up for the goons at the Something Awful forums.
edit: Never mind. I managed to get a page done without a crash.

We'll see how next week goes.

I managed to get this page out without a computer crash. So I'll be saving any guest art I have for when I really need it.
Heh heh heh...
You may notice that this page is somewhat bigger than the rest. Well, that's because I decided that most people are using broadband and a 1024x 768 monitor these days and they can keep up with my need for more text space. Welcome to the future, my friends.
Barely squeaked this one in under the deadline.
"Red" ends today with a bang... Oh-ho! I'm so clever!
Old comic-hack's secret: Lots of black is the best way to pump out a page quickly. It was the "Cut & Paste" of the olden days.

Okay, one of the reasons I was really hating to be late with this page isn't just that it was the cliff-hanger. It's also that I have a serious case of "busy" this and next week and I'm going to have to take a short bit of time off to take care of business.

"White" starts on May 10th. I hope you'll all come back then to see what happens... And yes, Bang just did get his head blown off. So you just GOTTA come back now.

Ed Moebius says: You, sir, are a interweb godhead!
Anonymous says: That bat is awesome magical. ...Why would flyin' bots need a car anywho? They can fly! Why need ground transport?
Roop Nanuwa says: A friend just linked me to your strip and it's great. However your RSS feed link is broken. Please fix so I can subscribe, thanks.
TWG says: Roop: Joey Manley has been informed. I'm certain he'll be swearing at the code before long. Ed: Thanks. Anon: All I can tell you is to keep reading. Thanks guys.
John Delorean says: Yay! A Shoutbox! Horay! The Comic's Brilliant by the Way.
D says: Well, from a standpoint mired in pre-apocalypse physics, the car is a perpetual motion machine and thus a source of unlimited energy. With generators on each driven wheel and a brick on the gas, they could charge up batteries for their comrades or something.
ArthemesiA says: I've red all these comics some time ago, and I've checked every day this page, and waited for a new one. :) And just now I noticed the "Every thursday" thingy. Damn. Still couple more days. Keep it up mate, you're doing Grrreat!
Anonymous says: Flying bots might like a power source that is self sustaining- that is a reason to take the car, it needs no fuel
Kevin says: Bang reminds me of a Tom Waits Song... "Going Out West"
SimWebb says: or it's for spare parts, or they could, you know, sell it.
Kiro says: There should be a giant robot panda groupleader. That can uhh.. SHOOT LASERS OUT OF IT's PAW BWAHAHAH
The Heckler of SIN! says: They did happen to, ya know, blow up the car a tad. Bad policy if they want to use it for a power source. Plus, how do they know it doesn't need gas? My guess? Either scrap metal and parts, or they 'liberated' another machine from the organic overlords!
Gunner says: Not a lot of gas staions in his area. Maybe it was bat powered.

Skin says: Man, read the whole comic, couldn't get enough. The style is just gritty enough, just comic book enough, just graphic novel enough to meet my picky arse needs (hey, even I wish I was a bit easier to please...). Plus, the "world" of "Band Barstal" is entirely inspiring, and has jump started some of my old sparks. I'd love to get in your head, Will, and bounce some ideas of the walls.
Skin says: I can't seem to find a contact to you. I'd like to get a dialogue going with you, if you don't mind. So, here's my e-mail: noeyes275@aim.com. If this doesn't get sent to you but sent to someone else. PLEASE DELETE THIS!!! I'm not sure how this system works, so I'll just have to find another way to contact him. Thanks. Hopefully this just doesn't get approved and posted.
TWG says: Skin: thewilliamg@gmail.com
sford says: You keep on proving that your imagination is a dark, dirty, and dangerous place. Now excuse me while I put on my flak jacket and make myself at home here.
Juan Navarro says: Best freakin' beginning ever
blueshat says: Really getting down on your story man. Bang is the man.
sford says: Yer gonna give me nightmares.
holycrapper says: I can't wait to see more!
Apfelsin says: "mush" xD
??? says: robot bukkake!
Stan Lee wanna be says: Seeing that robotic goo splash all over Bang made me hurl my Kentucky Fried Chicken chicken. So that is why dogs eat their own hurl.
Bang Boy says: Wow. Thats all I can say. This thing is so fantastic that I can't believe it. The Art is wonderful, the story, amazing(Very Dark Tower-esque, if you don't mind me saying.) One of the greatest works on the internet.
sford says: I guess I'm a little sad that he has so little regard for the robots that saved his freakin life. I know timers there are hard and it's every man for himself, but geeze. At least a *few* positive feelings... (I know, I know: wait for it.)
Sven says: even the one who allegedly saved his life was kinda an ass to him. no pity!
Skin says: I must say, "enhance your calm" is a great cultural reference.
YIP says: Yeah!
Nice says: She looks effin' badass, dude
myself says: more! more! WE DEMAND MORE! :P
Lymojo says: I have to agree with "Nice", this new character is indeed three kinds of walk to the park. Popped, stylized collars are, to use the parlance of our times, "ftk".
Ed Moebius says: LOVE her outfit! great work as always. keep it up!
Hiro Lune says: Remember, anyone that can survive alone in this post-apocalyptic world is pretty badass. I mean, just look at Bang. He's awesome without even trying to be.
SongCoyote says: I, for one, welcome our new mechanical overlods, and would like to remind them that as a trusted TV personality I can help them recruit more workers for their underground fuel mines!
William G says: Thanks, all.

Man, I am getting old... what is "FTK"?

Sim says: FOR THE KING!! ... I have no idea. Nice comic.
Michael Patrick says: Damn I have to catch up on your stuff. Your style has leaped and bounded!
Lymojo says: FTK means "For the Kill"... in retrospect I probably should have said FTW, "For the Win". I was sort of using it ironically, it's something people say in multiplayer first person shooter games. I don't really understand how they managed to become so popular that they needed their own acronyms, as both phrases seem kind of awkward.
Ola says: Ooh, first the Lazarus Churchyard robots and now a Tank Girl?
William G says: Ola, got a link to some images? All I can find on the comic is a description of the Lazarus Churchyard series.
Demaar says: Haven't been reading for very long, but I was won over fast. I love your style. The lady's design is friggen bad arse.
holycrapper says: I really don't like the new website format. It was better when you had it all on one page. Lemme know if this is just my browsers fault :). Otherwise still awesome, and still waiting for more :)
William G says: Crapper: I put up a note for anyone coming here via my homepage (So few people do. Most readers have the sites my comics are on bookmarked, or are using the RSS feeds.) that if they prefer the old jumble of java-scripts, they can email me about it at thewilliamg@gmail.com with the subject line "thumbs down". If enough people give it a thumbs down, I'll switch it back by this time next week.

(It'll be going to my "spam address", so make sure you include the subject line.)

Thanks.

M says: I know you've heard it, but you're good... and interesting. Now, put all the pages together again! ;)
dogtopus says: Arrgh! AAARRRGHHHH! ! !!! AAAAARRGHHHG!GH!!! ! ! What have you done?! I'LL HOLD YOU RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS! Wait, there's more? Ah, cool. :D The infected panel is frikkin awesome, btw. proper "WTF?!" moment! :D:D heehee Do you have any plans to print up Bang into a cool-ass book, Mr G?
Alvaro says: Awesome!
cliffjeff says: omg awesome plot twist! why must you play with my heart strings so?
Blob says: I agree. Excellent cliff hanger. I'm glad to hear there was more. I would have hated for this to be the end of the series.
GoAT says: Oh noes! I bet something saves his ass. He just has too many magical/paranormal things goin' on with him to go down to a chick in a fancy coat. ^_~
Sim says: Supple, sweet-ass goodness, this just keeps gettin' better! Keep truckin'!
Sabreur says: Not the face! Not the face!
sford says: Wow. I *knew* him getting gunk in the face would be bad news! Maybe she has special bullets or something... Another vote for a dead-tree edition, btw.
Matt says: Wow, he didn't even notice that he lost depth perception :p Great comic! I wub it so!
William G says: About print-

A lot of the pages from the first two chapters were lost when my storage hard drive on my old computer died last year. I can rescan and color "Pointy-Eared Bastards" since it was drawn on paper. But I switched over to doing the comics completely digitally (WACOM, baby!) on the third page of "Racing Towards Home". So both comics only exist in their final "web-friendly" versions in the archives here. Which is too low resolution for print.

That means any compilation would require a huge re-drawing/ re-coloring effort on my part. And I simply don't have the spare time to do that.

And also, if and when I do a print comic, it'll be an original story. I just feel that would be a better value for you guys who'd buy it.

So thanks for the interest in a dead tree version, but it's just not in the cards right now

dogtopus says: Ah! Fair 'nuff! :D I ask mainly because I like showing books to people. I shall send a link instead! :D WACOM!
Jiminy says: Hate to ask for something I can't really offer help with, but would it be possible to have the [First] & [Previous] buttons just above the comic instead of below the comments? As it stands, if I want to check that I haven't missed any I have to scroll past the current comic first :/ Great comic though :)
William G says: Thanks.

Joey Manley (head of the Modern Tales group) is aware of the positioning of the navigation buttons and how a lot of comments will push them down below the fold. But since he's been focusing on getting the next version of the WebComics Nation engine out(it powers everything here at Graphic Smash), me and the other artists being able to position them the way we want is a low priority.

So sorry, there's no way I can move them around. But if you stay patient, WCN 2.0 should solve all of this. From what I understand, it'll do everything except draw the comic for me.

Jiminy says: Hey thanks for the reply guys - appreciate that. Will do, good luck :D
Quantumfox says: Happy Online Comics Day! Same as Cinco De Mayo. Apparently, the Mexicans won independence with webcomics or something.
Mate says: Please revive him already! We all are getting anxious that what's gonna happen to him. Great comic man!
Skin says: With no offence to many of the splendid comments and not intended to insult anyone, but one thing I greatly enjoyed about this comic (and others affiliated with this provider system thing) was the refreshing formality. I'm not uptight guy, I troll plenty of wacky and zany blogs and forums, but I just don't think the emoticons and all the extra "GR8 COMIC RAWR!!!"s compliment the professionalism of both the comics and the server. Of course, this place doesn't revolve around me, this is just my comment. If you don't like it, you don't have to comment, I don't plan to harp. I just wanted to say it or I'd annoy myself about it.
William G says: Thanks for the concern over the professionalism, Skin. But it's just people showing their appreciation.

When we creators look at the pageviews, all we get is an abstract number that doesn't really reflect the number of eyes looking anyway. So we might as well be drawing for a calculator for all that means.

But, when people take the time to write us, we do appreciate it more. It lets us know that we're actually connecting to the readers.

That having been said, I don't want to be seeing any flames around here, guys. We're all here to enjoy some comics, right? Just enjoy yourselves.

capitain says: great art. that girl looks like ephrael stern... neatly placed.
Rachel says: I really enjoy what you're doing here. Please, keep it up! I like your main character and the world you have created-- very unique! Bookmarked.
